Reading A Cup of Jo this morning is an interesting topic,'How to raise kids like a French woman'. As a new book has been released, 'Bringing Up Bebe'. By Pamela Druckerman, an American mother of 3 who moved to Paris. As you may know I am totally infatuated with Paris at the moment. Although my daughter's are teenagers, I am really interested in getting a copy for myself. I am ordering my copy now and I will share interesting bits here on the blog as I read. Here is the excerpt shared by Jo on her blog.

1. You can have a grown-up life, even if you have kids. Pamela writes: "The French have managed to be involved with their families without becoming obsessive. They assume that even good parents aren't at the constant service of their children, and that there is no need to feel guilty about this. 'For me, the evenings are for the parents,' one Parisian mother told me. 'My daughter can be with us if she wants, but it's adult time.' "

2. You can teach your child the act of learning to wait. Pamela writes: "It is why the French babies I meet mostly sleep through the night…Their parents don't pick them up the second they start crying, allowing the babies to learn how to fall back asleep. It is also why French toddlers will sit happily at a restaurant. Rather than snacking all day like American children, they mostly have to wait until mealtime to eat. (French kids consistently have three meals a day and one snack around 4 p.m.) A [French mother] Delphine said that she sometimes bought her daughter Pauline candy. (Bonbons are on display in most bakeries.) But Pauline wasn't allowed to eat the candy until that day's snack, even if it meant waiting many hours."

3. Kids can spend time playing by themselves, and that's agood thing. Pamela writes: "French parents want their kids to be stimulated, but not all the time...French kids are—by design—toddling around by themselves....'The most important thing is that he learns to be happy by himself,' [a French mother] said of her son....In a 2004 study...the American moms said that encouraging one's child to play alone was of average importance. But the French moms said it was very important."

4. Believe it when you tell your child "No." Pamela writes: "Authority is one of the most impressive parts of French parenting—and perhaps the toughest one to master. Many French parents I meet have an easy, calm authority with their children that I can only envy. When Pauline [a French toddler] tried to interrupt our conversation, Delphine [her French mother] said, "Just wait two minutes, my little one. I'm in the middle of talking." It was both very polite and very firm. I was struck both by how sweetly Delphine said it and by how certain she seemed that Pauline would obey her...I gradually felt my "nos" coming from a more convincing place. They weren't louder, but they were more self-assured."

I followed most of these tips when bringing up my daughter's, my children always behaved while eating out as we were prepared and took colouring pencils and books to keep them entertained while waiting for their meals. I believe playing by themselves creates role play and opens up the imagination. My children were in bed by 7:30 when they were little and then 8:30 as they got older, even now as teenagers (on a school night) they are in bed at 9:30.

A little about me first, I am a mother to two beautiful teenage girls and step parent to 3 wonderful adults. I have been in their lives for 20 years they were 12, 9 & 7 when I first started seeing their father. The younger two have a child each of their own 3 year old Harrison and the other an 18 month year old Montana. I am so lucky to have the privilege to look after these gorgeous little people. My daughters and I looked after little Montana on Saturday and what can I say she is a little angel, so easy to please and spend time with. Although she did have a temperature and was not eating too much.

I know and understand as a parent you have your own methods in the way you do your parenting and heaven forbid no-one likes to be told how to PARENT. But if I see a way that may help them with a solution I will offer my suggestions, only because I have had the experience, not that my way may work. I remember when my girls were little I would try different ways to do things if that was suggested to me or read a heap of books to find another solution.

Little Montana is not the best sleeper and she has given her parents some awkward nights. But every time she sleeps here or at her Aunties house she sleeps like she has never slept before. I know people become set in their ways and in the end you can only offer suggestions and if they are tried and tested they may work and they may not.

Would you try a different method of helping you with your children or are you the type of parent that just does what you think is the best and no one can sway you either way? I would love to know your thoughts.

Rebecca Moses author of A Life of Style describes how each of us has the potential to turn our lives into a style collage. After all, our style doesn’t end with what we wear; it blends into how we live and what we come home to every night as well.
Being conscious of how we live and doing so confidently is an expression of who we are on the inside as much as what we project to the world. In order to truly have a signature style, a strong sense of individuality must be paired with a healthy self-confidence.
Discovering what your signature style is is often the most difficult part, so be sure to check out part two of the series where six tips are shared to help discover exactly what stirs your inner passions. Once you know what causes you to feel giddy, what instigates an unconscious smile or what you could spend hours doing without every looking at the time, the fun part begins, which is how do you want to express yourself to the world?
Such an expression can be revealed in as many ways as there are people on this earth and can be demonstrated in all avenues of a person’s life – fashion, home decor, speech, movement, and behavior. So I’ve tried to share some examples today of how you might what to incorporate your very own signature style into your every day life. The key is to embody a style that is true to who you are, what you believe and penetrates beyond the surface.
The difference between a true style icon like Sophia Loren or Audrey Hepburn and one of the millions of beautiful women in the world is that Sophia and Audrey have left an impression. An impression that goes beyond their appearance and encompasses how they choose/chose to carry themselves, how they treated others and how they contributed to the community around them.
Let’s get started to discover exactly what your signature style might look like.

BODY LANGUAGE

First impressions are a very funny thing. The trick is to accept that they exist and embrace them and more importantly, understand what you want your first impression to be of whomever you meet on any given day. Stand up tall, walk confidently, but femininely, sit like a lady, keep your stomach in and be aware of your body, face each person you are speaking to, extend a welcoming hand or kiss on the cheek, be warm, but be aware of your personal space bubble, set your boundaries (everyone’s will be different), refrain from tugging at your clothing in public or touching your hair or face too often (hints at insecurity), and when you smile, do so with sincerity.

SCENT

Choose a scent, one that you love, one that is of good quality and remain loyal. Or choose one for day and one for evening. Or one for summer and one for the chillier months. But whatever scent you choose, make it your own and wear it every day.

ACCESSORIES

Mireille Guiliano shares that her signature style would be described as always looking pulled together with the help of two key accessories: scarves and necklaces. But for someone else, it may be beautiful earrings and fantastic heels. Take Ines de Fressange, she always looks pulled together, but her footwear of choice is predominately a pair of flats. Whatever you gravitate towards, keep Guiliano’s four universal basics in mind when considering your wardrobe:

(1) Dress smexy (never so too much, always keep a little mystery),

(2) Invest in “good staples” – quality over quantity,

(3) No one has perfect body, so accent the positive and camouflage the rest, and

(4) Learn to stay within the personal boundaries of your style

MANNERISMS

One piece of my signature style is something that is recognizable by past and present students, family members and friends, and in one instance my boss knowing I was in the same restaurant as he was simply because he heard my laugh from across the room. Those every day idiosyncrasies that we do many times subconsciously are very often what others observe and associate with our identity, so what mannerisms do you share with the world on a daily basis? Is it your laugh, is it your eye contact, your ability to truly engage in conversation with the person who is speaking to you no matter what is going on around you, or your curiosity to get to know those around you instead of speaking about yourself? Such mannerisms can say so much.

UNIQUE DECOR

Modern, traditional and everything in between. How you choose to adorn your home’s interior is a process that is forever evolving, but as each of us continues to learn more about ourselves and evolve into our best selves, so does our idea of what decor within our home is the most inviting. While we can’t change our bone structure, we can rearrange our furniture, add wallpaper to our walls or tear it down and paint them. The home has a plethora of possibilities for each person to express their signature style and that is what makes it so exciting.

MAKE YOUR MARK

A woman’s signature style is her ability to bring her passion to the world, to express just enough of herself with others and to not give a hoot about their opinion. This is self-confidence. This is knowing and trusting yourself. Some women will make their mark with dramatic flair – Cher and Elizabeth Taylor come to mind, and others will do it subtly, but certainly – Grace Kelly and Anna Wintour. However you decide to make your mark, be sure it is stylish and impressive woman who does it.

Creating your own signature style is a very personal thing. No two signature styles are exactly alike. While they may have similar components, they will never be identical because each person is unique. Keeping in mind your tastes, where you live, your body type, your eye color, your bone structure, your personality, and so much more, everything comes into play as each person sets out to distinguish their very own signature style. The key however is experience, going out and living life and listening to what you are learning about yourself. The key to nailing your signature style is to always be conscious of your initial reaction to something and to always be honest with yourself.

READ

An undying love for the written word is a must and something that a stylish woman should continually be engaged in on a daily basis. Whether it is reading the daily newspaper’s opinion pages, devouring a how-to book or reading a recently released best-seller, you expose yourself to an array of ideas that had you never cracked a book, you might have been oblivious to. Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to creating your signature style. After all, how can you know what you truly love if you don’t provide yourself with options to choose from?

TRAVEL

As Mark Twain reminds us, “Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness . . .”and in aiding each of us along our journey to create our own signature style, the opportunity to travel opens our eyes to the myriad of ways people live their lives. I have always found that in traveling, I am reassured that there are endless ways to lead a content life and am strengthened upon returning home because of my new-found knowledge. Upon arriving home, ask yourself, what about their culture did I respond positively to? If something resonated with you, why not incorporate it some way in your life? Love having tea time similar to that of the Queen? Why not allow yourself the time in mid-afternoon to sit down with a hot pot of tea and a small treat to help get through the rest of the day?

SOCIALISE

Accepting invitations to attend new events and experience new people all the while listening to their ideas is certain to fine-tune what you truly enjoy, what type of lifestyle you genuinely feel comfortable living and the potential to discover a concept you had never considered before. My first yoga class, well, actually my second after a span of over ten years, was far more enlightening and engaging than I ever imagined. Maybe I was finally at a point in my life where I could get out of my own way, or maybe this particular instructor spoke a language I meshed with, either way, until you go, you’ll never know.

KEEP AN OPEN MIND

A way to ensure you continue to be invited to more social gatherings, especially the one’s you enjoy, is to always keep an open-mind. After all, nobody wants a stick-in the mud who can’t engage in a little healthy debate. Now this doesn’t mean that you can’t have your opinions, but by respecting other’s opinions, different concepts that are presenting in an art exhibit or a play you may see, you are doing yourself a tremendous favour. The moment you open your mind, letting go of staunchly kept assumptions and beliefs, you allow the opportunity for your curiosity to be piqued, your mind and thinking to be challenged and, even better, an occasion for growth. How it works is, even if you don’t agree with the idea that was presented, at least you’ve digested it, at least you’ve contemplated it. And as they say, the best way to win a debate is to know both sides. The same can be said for discovering your signature style, once you know what your options are, you can make the choice that fits you the best.

SELF REFLECTION

Out of all the suggestions mentioned above on how to pinpoint and create your signature style, allowing a few minutes for self-reflection is the simplest and most likely, the most productive. Take a moment to settle your mind and reflect on what makes you unique. What comes easily to you that many people struggle with or don’t even attempt? Can you carry off a pixie haircut with the pizzazz of Twiggy? Do you have a knack for sketching and illustrating? Can you quickly discern which colors and textures work well together? What do people compliment you on regularly? By considering this question, you may begin to realize you already do have the beginnings of your very own signature style and can now begin to build upon it.

USE YOUR SENSES

The tips suggested above to help you decide what your signature style should be, or maybe already is, really comes down to listening to yourself. In each of the situations above, pay very close attention to what jumps out at you? What outfits do your eyes gravitate towards when you’re traveling, shopping or browsing through magazines? What lines in books speak to you? What scents do you gravitate towards? What destinations seem to be calling your name? Who do you look up to? Who inspires you? What textures feel good? What flavors leave you always wanting more?

By being honest about your true passions and tendencies, you will find that you are closer to narrowing down your signature style than you may have at first realized. Now it’s time to have the confidence to own it.

Since hitting my 40's I am really interested in finding my own personal style, hence, why I have bought 'Parisian Chic'. I have always been one to have a few of the latest fashion trends in my seasonal wardrobe. Sometimes I get it wrong and think 'what am I doing?' and end up wearing something once or twice and end up realising that this is not me and does not really suit at all. I found this series on a fave blog of mine 'the simply luxurious life' . I just had to share.

Do you have a signature style? Do you wear whatever whenever or do you put a lot of thought into what you wear on any particular day? I always put thought into what I wear even when I am home for the day.

There are seemingly endless lists of women and men that come to mind when the term “signature style” buoys up from the conversation. An idea, a look, an attitude, an approach to life that is undeniable relatable to a particular person without question. You most likely know a few people in your own life who have their own unique, consciously chosen signature style that they confidently express to the world without saying a word about it, unless complimented. After reading Rebecca Moses’s gorgeously illustrated and eloquently written book A Life Of Style which shares the variety of ways style can be cultivated and shared, I began to ponder even more how this idea of possessing a “signature style” ties in to living a simply luxurious life. I immediately came to the conclusion that creating a signature style, which can be done and expressed in a plethora of ways, is a mandatory ingredient in order to create the life you desire to live. After all, a signature style requires you to know who you are so that you not only can you express yourself honestly, but you can create the life that will set most comfortably with your soul.

HOW YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE

With every decision we make, every path in life we decide to travel, we are revealing our style, our preferences, our priorities, and the way which we feel we can live our best life. As always, actions speak louder than words and that is most certainly something to think about when trying to cultivate a signature style that feels genuine to who we are. By choosing to take care of our health, walk every day, befriend our neighbours and foster a home of nurture and education for our children we immediately say to the world what matters to us. Who we choose to surround ourselves with and how we speak is very telling of what we value and our inner strength and discipline.

WHAT YOU WEAR

Style is quite different from fashion. As Coco Chanel so effortlessly reminds us, “Fashion fades. Only style remains.” Knowing what clothes flatter our individual bodies best, which colors complement our skin tone and which cuts will never look stunning on us, we cultivate a style that is uniquely our own. The peace of mind is knowing that whatever walks down the runway each season, the knowledge of which skirts to gravitate towards and which dresses to stay away from becomes innate, but it will take time (some more than others) to grasp this knowledge, which, for better or worse, is unique to each and every one of us.

With all of that said, what you choose to wear on a daily basis, out to dinner, to parent/teacher conferences, on a first interview reveals to onlookers how you feel about yourself and whether or not you really know who you are and what strengths you possess. Without uttering one word, you can have an entire conversation with someone for better or for worse.

HOW YOU LIVE IN YOUR HOME

Whether you reside in a grand four story townhouse in Manhattan or a humble studio apartment, how you choose to live, and thereby decorate, your abode communicates a persuasive message to your guests. Between the colors you choose, the fabrics you enjoy and the care you take to spruce up and bring nature in (whether it be by way of plants, animals or simply natural light), you can quickly express a signature style that is all your own.

HOW YOU TREAT OTHERS

Similar to how you choose to go about living your life, how you choose to treat others on a daily basis when there is no tangible motive for following the golden rule expresses a great deal about your character. Do you truly listen? Do you look others in the eye? Do you arrive on time? When the truth may be something they don’t want to hear, what do you do? How you approach these and other situations as you navigate in our social world conveys your true character.

tips to help ~ POSITIVE HABITS

People often think of habits in a negative way. Ask someone to name a few of their habits, and they will probably report what they believe to be ‘bad’ habits such as smoking or eating too much. In fact almost everything we do - the good, the bad and the ugly - is driven by habits.

Some habits are very positive and developing them will greatly benefit you. In fact, cultivating these habits will almost certainly have the effect of causing some of the more negative ones to drop away.

Here are some of the most constructive and beneficial habits you can try to develop.

1. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes

The importance of empathy cannot be overstated. It is so easy to think we are right, and yet our own mental habits or beliefs are, just like everyone elses, provisional and do not correspond to reality. The map is not the territory. We are not ‘right’ and other people ‘wrong.’ Genuinely trying to see the other person’s perspective can be liberating and mind opening.

2. Embracing change

People sometimes say that we live in a time of unprecedented change. It is true that change is happening quickly and that the world is complex and interconnected. But it is probably true to say that this has always been the case. The future is inherently uncertain, and the ability to adapt to it by being open to new ways of doing things will keep you relevant and engaged.

3. Embracing technology

One of the obvious theatres of change is technology. It’s changing the world and, if we don’t move with it, we will become deskilled and irrelevant. Some people try to resist technology – this seems like a very unwise move to me, like king Cnut trying to hold back the tide – it cannot be done and you will only get into trouble.

4. Taking time for yourself

It’s important to spend a little time each day just for you. Spend a bit of time on your own to do what you want to do. Read, write, meditate, play music, dance, sing - do what makes you feel happy,

5. Exercising (almost) daily

The benefits of just 20 minutes of exercise per day are well documented. Even 10-15 minutes of vigorous exercise per day can be enormously beneficial. It will keep your metabolism high and build muscle tone, both helping you to burn more calories; it will help you sleep better and make you less prone to illness.

6. Eating healthily

No complicated diets or spending hours at the market or in the kitchen are required. Just make some simple changes to the way you do things – eat a piece of fruit at breakfast; buy a salad for lunch or dinner; take some nuts of fruit to work as a snack; have a couple of ‘sugar free’ days per week; stop taking sugar in your tea. Simple, little changes can have a huge impact on your health.

7. Meditate

People who meditate regularly experience tangible benefits. Studies have shown that physical and mental health improves as a result of meditation. Nothing difficult is required – no training or special equipment and no religious beliefs. Just sit quietly for 10 minutes and watch your breathing, trying to focus only on the breath and nothing else. That’s it. It is hard to focus only on one thing for any length of time but, with practice, you will get better and reap the benefits.

8. Reading

Reading can be one of the greatest and simplest pleasures. It can open up new worlds. It can truly change your life. With the advent of kindle and iPad, you can carry a whole library around with you. Even without the technology, just slipping a book into your bag for that commute for the ‘dead time’ we inevitably experience is a simple way of building the reading habit.

9. Keeping in touch with family and friends

People with strong social networks are happier, healthier and live longer. It is so easy to stay in touch these days, even if you live a long way from home. A short phone call once a week, just to ‘touch base.’ Technology makes it easy to stay in touch – Facebook, love it or loathe it, is actually a remarkably effective way of keeping in contact.

10. Positive Thinking

And finally, the most important one … developing positive ways of thinking will make an enormous difference to your experience of life. Your mind is where everything starts. The way you think is the key to everything. What you focus on persists and grows.

Let it be ~ Stress zaps energy, but ignoring stressful thoughts and feelings can keep them alive. If you acknowledge them, they are easier to let go. This mindfulness exercise can help: take some slow breaths and focus on the parts of your body that feel tense. Next concentrate on the thoughts that are making you tense. As each thought comes to you, acknowledge it and then picture it floating away on a leaf down a stream.

Get some mountain air ~ A simple yoga breathing exercise, the mountain pose, helps calm your mind and recharge your batteries. Stand with your feet hip width apart, arms by your sides. Close your eyes, take 3 natural breaths, then open your eyes. As you inhale, sweep your arms out to the sides and up, until your palms touch each other overhead.

Lift and expand your chest as you breathe in. Hold the breath for 2 seconds as you gaze up at your hands. Exhale and sweep your arms back down to your sides. As you breathe out, draw your belly in towards your spine. Hold the exhalation for 2 seconds, eyes straight ahead. Repeat 6 times.

Do you feel melancholy when another year has started and the kids are back at school? I am excited for them going back to school, but will miss having them home. I still believe your school years are some of the best years of your life. I loved school and was always excited to go. We lived in the country on a property so school was our social outlet as we did not tend to do too much with friends on weekends or holidays except for the occasional sleepover. I used to have to travel 45 minutes on the bus to get to school. It was fun, the bus trips were always entertaining. What are your favourite memories from your school years?

BREATHE EASY ~ We have all been told to 'take a deep breath'. It is recommended that we take that advice with this 4-7-8 breath exercise. Doing this daily will induce a feeling of serenity and over time it will give you greater emotional resilience-especially during difficult moments.

1. Rest the tip of your tongue on the roof of your mouth, just behind your top teeth.

2. Exhale completely through the mouth, with your lips tightly pursed, to make a whoosh sound.

3. Close your mouth and inhale deeply and slowly through your nose for a silent count of 4.

4. Keep your mouth closed and gently hold your breath for a silent count of 7.

5. Exhale slowly through your open mouth for a count of 8, making the same whoosh sound.

6. Repeat steps 3,4 and 5 for a total of four breaths. Perform this twice daily for optimal results.

starting today 1 MILLION KILO CHALLENGE

Today I am starting in the 1 million kilo challenge. My starting weight is 65kg and I hope to get down to around 58kg.

I think I will work better on a program as it will help me commit more. I think this is a fabulous initiative by channel 10 to help people stay on track. My main aim is to tone my tummy and hip area and get rid of the excess fat. Healthy food helps learning ~ without a healthy breakfast, kids cannot concentrate and

can become disruptive. A healthy lunch is just as important to help kids survive the afternoon.

Kids need help with homework ~ where possible create a set routine.

Refuel with a healthy snack when the student get home. Then sit down together

to complete the set tasks. As it gets later the children tend to get tired.

Proper sleep habits are critical ~ children are going to school tired after late nights.

Parents can support good sleeping habits by enforcing mobile phones and social media are

switched off at night. Ending screen time at least 30 minutes before bedtime and ensuring

they are in bed at a regular time.

Children need help being organised ~ Being organised makes the day better for both children and teachers.

Teachers appreciate a child who is organised. You can help kids get organised by:

+ Creating a family calendar so everyone can see what's on each week.

For young children, use visual symbols.

+ Once at home, unpack your child's school bag together and discuss what is on for the next day.

Get your child to put their school shoes in the same place every afternoon.

+ Always pack the school bag and prepare the uniform the night before.

+ Ask your child question's such as, 'What do you need tomorrow?'

Friendship ~ true friends are hard to find. Over the years I have made friends with my daughters school friends parents. They have come and gone. When my eldest started school I had formed, I thought, a really close knit bond with a few mother's. We did stay friends for the whole 7 years but where are they know. I am no longer in contact with these lovely ladies. I have tried but only to have calls not returned. Over the years I have a few close friends but only one that I truly confide in.

I wonder what will happen when my daughters finish school will the stay friends with whom they have become really close with over the years (some they have known since they were in pre-school). I think they have an advantage over myself. As I moved around a bit and spent my high school years in the country. I am still in contact with a few and thank you to facebook I can still keep in contact. I hope my daughters will find it easier. I tell them that you have to work hard at keeping your friendships.

I would love to know your friendship values and how you make friends and keep them near.

10 ways to WHINGE LESS & BE HAPPIER

Proverb : ~ 'Instead if complaining that the rose bush is full of thorns, BE HAPPY THE THORN BUSH HAS ROSES'

We all complain. Even if you argue that you are the happiest person in the world, you still complain sometimes.

Sometimes we complain without even realizing it, but rarely is it ever helpful. Sure, a common complaint can bond two people who may have nothing in common, but too much complaining would just break down the relationship.

No matter what I said or did, it never seemed to cheer her up. There is no arguing that she was going through a tough time, but her negative attitude certainly made matters worse. Eventually we grew apart because it was more than I could handle at the time.

So what happens if you are the one stuck in the negative attitude? We’ve all been there. I know I sure have. There are days when everything seems to go wrong and complaining is the easiest thing to do.

It’s easier to complain instead of fixing a problem, like quitting a job or having a talk with someone. But I find that when you put your mind toward a more positive outlook and force yourself to end complaining, it is possible!

Here are some tips to stop complaining and ditch the negative thoughts to focus on finding solutions:

1. Change the way you think.

This is definitely easier said than done. Our brains tend to gravitate towards the negative.. Much like the quote above, we are bothered first by the thorns in the rose bush instead of being marveled by the sight of the beautiful roses.

This requires a new practice of being mindful. When you find yourself thinking or saying a negative comment about something or someone, stop and force yourself to say something positive instead. Enlist the help of a cheerful friend to stop you when you complain and help you to see the positive in the situation.

2. Allow yourself to vent every once in a while.

Constantly ignoring your negative thoughts could add up. If you are really going through a rough time, don’t be afraid to share your feelings with a close friend or family member or see a therapist. Don’t feel ashamed if you need to talk through negative feelings.

3. Practice yoga.

Yoga is a great way to exercise, relax, and learn to be mindful. Yoga focuses on breathing, movement, and meditation and helps you to control your mind and body. Our minds often race in a million directions. Yoga can help you calm your racing thoughts and be more positive with your intentions.

4. Train yourself to be less judgmental.

We often complain about others because we think they are not up to our standards. Once you stop judging people without knowing their stories, you will most likely complain less about the things people do. It takes 21 days to change a habit.

5. Make a list of things you’re grateful for.

Stopping for a minute and thinking of all the great things and amazing people in your life will probably put any silly complaints you had to rest.

6. Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Next time you’re with your friends, family, or co-workers and engaged in a complaint fest, speak up or quiet down. Depending on the crowd, either speak up to stop the complaining and change the subject to something sunnier or simply be quiet and don’t complain yourself.

7. Accept responsibility.

If something is bothering you, either fix it or accept that nothing can be done right now, so why complain? Complaining is a passive activity. Change that complaining into action to solve the problem or simple accept it and give your mind something else to focus on.

8. Find what makes you happy.

Sometimes this list can be easy, full of hobbies you enjoy. Sometimes it requires deeper introspection. Are you constantly complaining about your job? Maybe it is time to make the hard decision to move on to another job or career. Uncover what your biggest complaints are about and see if you can change the situation to make you happy.

9. Take care of yourself.

Stress and a busy lifestyle can often take over our lives and break down anyone’s positive spirit. Take time out from your life for just you. Make sure you get to see that movie you were dying to watch, take a hot bath, head to your exercise class, get a manicure, play sports, or do whatever relaxes and energizes you. It could just put you in a new frame of mind.

10. Simply ask yourself when you open your mouth: would you rather complain or be happy?

Choose happiness, focusing on the positive, and being kind always! It is your choice and no one else’s.

The right foundation will even out your skin tone and give you the appearance of flawless skin.

Follow these steps:

Find your perfect match

- Best done in a department store where you can get a makeup artist to match your shade.

- Ask for samples and try them at home and in different lights.

- Test it on your jawline - the right shade will sink right in and you won¹t be able to see the foundation on your skin.

- If your body is darker than your face don’t be tempted to buy a darker shade, you can boost the colour later with bronzer.

If in doubt, buy the two closest shades to your complexion and mix them. Your skin changes colour throughout the year so you¹ll have options.

- Avoid buying any foundation with a pink undertone, it never looks natural. Golden undertones are better.

- The most popular is a dewy liquid as women find it easiest to apply and it looks most natural. If you like more coverage try a cream. I like Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation – it’s pricey but worth the investment, people always comment on my skin when I wear it. MAC Face and Body is another awesome product – it’s quite a light coverage but lovely and luminous – you won’t find a makeup artist without this in their kit. For a budget-friendly option Revlon Colorstay is great.

It's all in the preparation

- Just like with painting a wall or icing a cake, you want the surface to be as smooth as possible.

- Cleanse to remove any oil or old makeup and if you have time use a facial scrub, it will give you a natural glow that will show through your foundation.

- Apply sunscreen, a light moisturiser (not a night cream which will leave a greasy residue) or a primer (like Napoleon Perdis Autopilot) but never all at once - give it a few minutes to sink in and you’re perfectly primed.

Lay the foundations

- Apply a small amount, starting from the nose and blending out from the middle of the face. You don’t need to cover the whole face, just the red, blotchy areas.

- Makeup artist like to use brushes, I like fingers. They warm the product up and you can really massage it into the skin. The Beauty Blender sponge is a clever little tool that helps blend and can give a photo-shopped finish.
- Beware the tide mark! Always check the sides of your face and under your chin, making sure you blend foundation into the temples and hairline.

- Dot a creamy highlighting concealer under the eyes (Try YSL Touche Eclat or Laura Mercier Secret Concealer) and a more chalky, powdery concealer for any spots. A small concealer brush or cotton tip is handy to stop bacteria from your fingers getting into the blemish. Powder over the top of the spot to keep the concealer in place. (Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit has a powder in the bottom which is handy)

- Apply a luminising cream to cheat radiance - I like Nars The Multiple in Copacabana or Maldives. Dab it onto cheekbones and brow bones and blend.

- If you want it to stay all day, use a little translucent powder – just over your T-zone or it will look too matte. Dust it on with a big round circular brush. You can add powder bronzer after you powder to warm your skin up.

- Mineral makeup is great for super sensitive, acneic skins and after cosmetic treatments, but it can be fiddly. You need a kabuki brush, which is a thick, stumpy brush with tightly packed bristles. Tap out some of the product into the lid and swirl the brush in the powder. Blow excess off and blend into skin in circular motions. Youngblood and Inika make good ones.

Liquid mineral foundations are easier but hard to find - I love Dermaquest Breathable Coverage SPF 30 - as it’s my foundation and sunscreen in one.

Sigourney’s top tips:

- one week until my princesses return back to school :(

Yes, that is a sad face. I am one of those mothers that love having her daughters around and gets emotional as

another school year commences. My eldest is heading into her two final years at school, OMG, I cannot believe it. Year 11 such a big year ahead. Lots of hard work and fun to be had. Maybe working out exactly what she would like to do with her life, but hopefully not in a hurry to move out.

My youngest is going into year 8. What a strong personality she has and I am grateful for, although I can be at the other end occasionally. A strong personality can allow you stick up for yourself when certain types of friends turn against you for doing the right thing. Can I just say the bullies are just jealous and seriously have a lot of growing up to do.

Wishing both my gorgeous daughters a happy, fun, exciting year back at school. I love you both to the moon and back, or as a certain precious little boy would say 'love you to infinity and beyond'.

Do you lack energy in the afternoon?

I know I do every now and again and I need a huge energy boost.

Here are some great ideas from The Style Net.

We are not super human beings and every now and then we all experience an energy slump.

We have put together 10 natural, simple and free ways to boost your energy levels and increase your

productivity:

1. Open a window.
Get some fresh air, if this is not possible, turn on a fan or take a quick 5 minute walk outside your office.

2. Stay organised.
Cluttered environments zap our energy and create frustration when we can’t find things.

Clean it up and clear your mind.

3. Take two minutes to sit and breathe.
Deep breathing helps to reduce stress and therefore fatigue. Increase the level of oxygen in your
blood and calm your mind for just a few minutes and you will notice the positive effects immediately.

4. Put the sugar in your bin.
Increased sugar levels will lead to fluctuations in energy and ultimately have a negative effect. Bin it!

5. Eat regularly throughout the day.
East consistently, and choose whole grains and natural energy foods.

6. Prioritise your day.
Schedule a ‘to-do’ list the evening before, and start the day with the hardest/most important task first.
And once that is done, the rest of the day will be an enjoyable breeze!

7. Exercise.
A no brainer and yet few of us do this everyday. Most research suggests it is best to exercise

in the morning, but I find this almost impossible with my schedule and I prefer to exercise at night.
I think as long as you are fitting in at least 20 minutes per day your body and mind will thank you for it.

8. Sleep!
We generally need 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep to function at our best. Don’t build up a sleep debt.

Get Protection ~ Just like skin, your hair burns. This leaves it prone to colour fade. Use a leave in

conditioner with UV protection. Always use colour care shampoo and conditioner.

Fight Frizz ~ Frizz happens then your hair is dry and the humidity is high. Thirsty hair sucks on

the airs moisture to compensate, resulting in frizz. Hydrating shampoo ad conditioner help. Blot wet

hair with kitchen paper towel to absorb water, then use a smoothing product before and after styling.

Prevent an oily scalp ~ Your hair may seem oilier in summer as you are more active. This can stimulate

sebum production. Use oil-control shampoo and conditioner and use dry shampoo to mop up oiliness.

Stop swimmer's hair ~ Swimming in salt or chlorinated water can leave mineral deposits on hair, dulling

shine and leaving a greenish tinge. Before swimming, saturate hair with a leave in protective product and

use a deep cleansing shampoo.

Tip - depending on the thickness of the hair he may do a little back combing, teasing in the pony to add bulk.

2. When you are left with a swinging ponytail, hold the end of the hair and twist until it turns back on itself,

wrapping it around the elastic.

3. Have a selection of bobby pins and french pins ready. Start to secure the twisted hair, with a couple of

pins first so you can take your hand away. Then create the desired shape of the bun. Taking a hand mirror

to see that the shape looks good from the profile too.

Tip - David then likes to use a comb to smooth the hair down around the head, to tuck some hair into the

chignon.

Pasta Frittata

8 eggs
1 1/2 to 2 cups left over pasta. " I used leftover bolognese sauce and shells"
1/2 cup monterey jack cheese
2 tablespoons milk or half and half
garlic powder
salt and pepper
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup marinara for serving
parmesan cheese at the end and parsley

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Meanwhile in a warm skillet melt butter. Beat eggs,
cheese, milk, spices and stir in the pasta. Place in the warm skillet and cook about 5
minutes and than transfer to preheated oven and cook for about 20 to 30 min until
done. Serve with sauce.

I found this on a favourite read of mine 'The Style Net'. I am a person that always worries how people perceive

me and I take on board comments and criticism to let it affect me for days at a time.

My daughters are constantly saying "Let It Go". This something I am trying to learn to do this year.

In this fast paced world it is so easy to get caught up in the ‘whirlwind’ of life and forget about what is actually important and what we want in life. Let go of the negative and useless thoughts that are holding you back and create space in your mind to think and achieve your dreams.

Let go of everyone’s opinion of you. ‘What others think of you is none of your business”. None of us like to be criticized, particularly when it comes from those close to us, however constantly trying to please others is not only exhausting but moves us further away from who we truly are. Be your authentic self, and you will be far happier and attract the people who will love you for who you are.

Let go of what everyone else wants for you. Do the things you want to do in life, not what your friends and family tell you you should be doing. As Steve Jobs said, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.”

Let go of boundaries and instead dream big. When you start something new or take something in a new direction, there will always be others who will tell you not to do it, that it will never work and that you are crazy for even trying. Ignore them all, block out the negative noise, do your planning and then just do it!

Let go of jealous feelings and concerns about what everyone else has. Life is not always fair and there will always be someone with more money, a more successful career, a bigger house, a more expensive car, a better relationship… and the list goes on. Instead, focus on the great things in your life and be grateful for what you have.

Let go of the things you can’t control. There are some things in life that are beyond our control, so instead of draining your energy trying to control these factors, instead focus on how to deal with them as best you can. Sometimes we don’t have a choice in the outcome, but we always have a choice in how we deal with it.
